Ocean Star Drilling Museum

What is it?

As you overlook the Gulf of Mexico from Galveston,  you will probably see some oil rigs. I bet you didn’t know that each rig you see is a small community of people living in them doing important work using specialized equipment

Learn more about what they do by visiting  the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum.  The Ocean Star Rig was retired converted into a unique three-story museum for the public  which is  operated by the Offshore Energy Center.

The  Museum is dedicated to the offshore gas and oil industry. It is housed on a retired jack-up rig which is set up in the harbor of Galveston.

What You Can Learn/Exhibits

  • Offshore Drilling: takes visitors on a journey of the technical process of extracting oil and gas offshore.
  • The Pipe Deck houses exhibits and equipment too huge to be stored inside the museum, such as a drill pipe, blowout preventer, and a cementing unit.
  • The Drill Floor is underneath the derrick and was where the work hole drilling is done
