Sand Castle Competition

Sandcastle Competition  Galveston 2020

Want to take part in a Sandcastle building contest or watch others build some amazing sandcastles?

Well, now is your chance because on August 22, 2020 the Houston American Institute of Architects (AIA) Sandcastle competition is scheduled in Galveston’s East Beach.

The team registration is already up and is waiting for teams to join.  Last year, over 60 teams participated.  The sandcastle competition is a wonderful event because it is a fund-raising event for AIA Houston and the ArCH (Architecture Center Houston) Foundation.

It is also one of the top five revenue generating events for Galveston.

Teams get started bright and early in the morning at 6:30 am preparing for the competition while the public is welcome to arrive at 9 am and watch the teams build their castles.

The actual building competition is from 10 am to 3 pm with public favorite voting taking place between 1 and 3:30 pm.  The professional judging will take place between 3 and 4:30 pm wrapping up with the Awards Ceremony.

Judging is based on difficulty, carving technique, artistic execution, concept originality, and utilization of the site.  Teams begin months in advance to prepare for the event so start your planning now if you are up for the challenge and want to win one of those amazing prizes!

The prizes are a gold bucket for first place, a silver shovel for second place, and a bronze shovel for third place! Other prizes are also awarded for various categories such as superheroes, favorite tallest structure, and more.

Or if you just want to come watch some fancy sandcastles being built at the beach, East Beach has parking available for $15 and the public can enjoy a picnic while watching the competition.

Come enjoy a great day at the beach filled with fun, sun, waves, and sandcastles.
