Birds

FeatherFest-(things you didn’t know)

Are you a fanatic of nature? Do you love taking photos of birds?

If that’s the case, then attending FeatherFest Galveston is your best bet. For y’all who have been here before, you know it’s a fun filled day of birdwatching, photography of nature, exploratory field trips, and evening social events. So, get out there as soon as you can; the birds are waiting for you!

FeatherFest takes place during the third weekend of April unless Easter happens to fall on that weekend. When Easter falls on the third Sunday, FeatherFest is moved to the second weekend of April. This year, FeatherFest should fall on April 19th through the 22nd.

Galveston Island happens to be a big location for birds due to the countless number of beaches, woods, and wetlands that is has. In fact, there are over 300 species of birds living here on the island.

One of the events they hold here are birding fieldtrips, which is my personal favorite. Our trip begins around four with a bit of birding, followed by a fabulous dinner and overnight stay at the Oyster Bayou Hunting Club Lodge.

The following day, after breakfast, we go out to explore the Historic Lagow Ranch with a nice refreshing walk around their fresh water reservoir. After a brief but delicious lunch, we will go right back to the lodge and explore their flooded fields for shorebirds, waterfowl, egrets, etc. You can go on this extortionary adventure for the very affordable price of $160!

Another one of my favorite events was our trip to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s sea turtle facility. It is a place dedicated to the deep research of the beloved sea turtles.

Only about six or seven species exist, and they are all classified as endangered, so it was nice to see all the generous things the facility was doing to help these poor animals out. Keep in mind that this facility is located about 15 minutes away from FeatherFest facilities, so please make time in your schedule to get there on time with your tour group.

Also keep in mind that it will be very hot and humid in there, so please bring appropriate clothing. For an affordable price of $15, you can see these sea turtles in action!
